Reducing competition for water in Sudan

In Sudan, seasonal migration is a way of life. Every year, as the water dries up in the southern part of Sudan, nomadic families migrate.

To avoid conflict and to ensure that the routes do not intrude on farm and agricultural land, tribes may send a representative ahead to assess the route and reach agreements with resident tribes. However, the system is a fragile one.

Funded by the European Union’s Instrument Contributing to Stability and Peace, UN Environment is currently establishing migratory routes along Sudan’s ‘central livestock corridor', rehabilitating and maintaining water yards, installing pumps and renovating dams. Importantly, the project is also bringing together community leaders from different villages and migrant pastoralists to discuss and plan how to share local water resources fairly.
