Tajikistan to Focus on Past Achievements and Ways Forward

Twelve years ago, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution initiated by the Republic of Tajikistan and declared the period 2005 – 2015 as the 'International Decade for Action “Water for Life”. Being the initiator of the Decade, the Government of Tajikistan has taken a number of measures at national, regional and global levels for its successful implementation. Now, that the Decade comes to an end, Tajikistan has invited the international community for a three-day-conference to assess and plan for the future. "This Conference looks at the past decade for inspiration for a more sustainable water future for all," says Sulton Rahimov, First Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources in Tajikistan.

In the presence of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the conference will see
high-level plenary and thematic sessions take place as well as round tables and events on themes such as 'Water and Children', 'Water and Women', 'Water and the Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States' and 'Water and Mountainous Countries'. “The 2013 Dushanbe Conference on Water Cooperation contributed, among other things, to raise the profile of water and women on the UN agenda. It is our hope that the 2015 Dushanbe "Water for Life" Conference will produce similar effects [around issues such as] water and children, least developed countries, small islands and mountain countries,” says Rahimov.
