The Strategic Framework for WASH Climate Resilient Development, developed by the Global Water Partnership (GWP) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has been revised and launched as the 2022 edition.

Resilient WASH programming helps ensure that WASH infrastructure and services are sustainable and resilient to climate related risks; and that WASH contributes to building community resilience to climate change.

The Strategic Framework consists of four ‘quadrants’ which provide guidance on how to ensure resilient WASH services:

  1. Understand the problem: covering the various elements that help to understand the risks climate change poses to the provision  and sustainability of WASH services.
  2. Identify and appraise options: the identification and appraisal of options to improve climate resilience.
  3. Deliver solutions: the integration of options into existing strategies and plans, and the implementation of solutions.
  4. Monitor and move forward: monitoring and the lessons learned from the implementation of climate resilient development activities.

In the foreword to the 2022 edition, Aidan Cronin, Director a.i. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Programme Group at UNICEF, says, “Climate considerations need to be integrated into all stages of WASH programming. This is no longer optional for the sector, to ensure the safety, affordability, sustainability and equality of WASH services.”
