UNU-INWEH report on ageing water storage infrastructure

Earlier this year, United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) released a report on the state of large water storage dams.

The report provides an overview of dam ageing by world region and primary function —water supply, irrigation, flood control, hydropower, and recreation. It also states that by 2050, most of humanity will live downstream of large dams built in the 20th century and showcased a few examples of large dams’ removal – a relatively new but emerging phenomenon.

The report further analyzes large dam construction trends across major geographical regions and primary dam functions, such as water supply, irrigation, flood control, hydropower, and recreation.
