Frontiers 2017 - emerging issues of environmental concern

As the human population grows and prospers, so our activities produce environmental changes that cascade through the Earth’s systems – beyond the scope of national borders and sometimes the carrying capacity of nature.

Environmental change too often becomes environmental degradation in the form of air, water and soil pollution; deforestation, soil erosion and desertification; water scarcity and biodiversity loss. Environmental degradation affects where and how people can live. The interlacing trends of climate change, population growth, rising consumption, and environmental degradation are likely to lead to the displacement and migration of even greater numbers of people in the future.
