Flash floods in Chad kill 10 and leave 120,000 people displaced

Nearly 120,000 people have been displaced by flash floods caused by heavy rains across Chad in the month just ended. At least 32,000 of the affected persons are in the capital, N’Djamena.

Many people whose houses have been destroyed remain in need of shelter and emergency assistance.

“Not only does the damage caused by floods exacerbate the risks of COVID-19 due to unsanitary conditions, there are very high risks of cholera and malaria outbreaks as water levels rise and water stagnates in the city,” explained Anne Schaefer, the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) Chief of Mission in Chad.

IOM is calling for a durable disaster risk reduction and humanitarian approach to provide relief to the affected populations and strengthen the capacity of local actors to prepare for and respond to potential disasters in the long term.
