Closing in on the Post-2015 Development Agenda

As the final round of negotiations on the Post-2015 Development Agenda continue this week, the water community can be encouraged by progress to date, while mindful of the hard work still to come.

The momentum leading into this week’s final round of negotiations has been promising. Earlier this month, for example, Member States at the Third International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD3) agreed on an Addis Ababa Action Agenda which urges commitments to spending targets for water and sanitation, among other sectors. The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) adopted a declaration of commitment to establish a “strong, universal, ambitious, inclusive and people-centred” post-2015 development agenda that completed the unfinished business of the Millennium Development Goals and responded to new challenges.

As the final round of inter-governmental negotiations begins this week, UN-Water remains confident that inputs from last month's final outcome document, which captures the essence of the entire water cycle, are a step in a positive direction towards the adoption by Member States of a dedicated water and sanitation goal, Goal 6, as part of the post-2015 development framework. Selecting appropriate indicators, for which UN-Water is making recommendations, to measure progress on Goal 6 will be the next major step in this process.

Summary

The process of arriving at the post 2015 development agenda was Member State-led with broad participation from Major Groups and other civil society stakeholders.

There has been numerous inputs to the agenda, notably a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by an open working group of the General Assembly, the report of an intergovernmental committee of experts on sustainable development financing, GA dialogues on technology facilitation and many others.
