2030 Agenda: New report looks at water and sanitation interlinkages

Monday, 29th of August, World Water Week, Stockholm, Sweden - The 2030 Agenda and its 17 goals cuts right across the three pillars of the United Nations:  Peace and Security; Human Rights and Justice; and Sustainable Development. Recognising that we can no longer function in silos, bridging becomes essential to creating the future we want.

At the 2016 edition of World Water Week in Stockholm, UN-Water launched a new brief that looks at addressing the interlinkages between Goal 6 on water and sanitation and the other 16 goals.

With a human rights-based approach supporting the aims, understanding the linkages enables countries to implement the Goals and targets effectively by harnessing synergies between them while managing any potential conflicts. Examples of synergies include increasing access to water supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) [6.1, 6.2] in homes, healthcare facilities, schools and workplaces, complemented by wastewater treatment
[6.3], as a way to reduce risk of water-borne disease [3.1–3.3, 3.9] and malnutrition [2.2]; support education [4.1–4.5] and a productive workforce [8.5, 8.8]; and address poverty [1.1, 1.2, 1.4], gender inequality [5.1, 5.2, 5.4, 5.5] and other inequality [10.1–10.3].

The UN-Water Analytical Brief analyses the central role of water and sanitation to describe the links and interdependencies between the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 6 on water and sanitation and those of other Goals.
